Colvard Learning in Africa

Colvard Learning believes that all children should have the opportunity to dream beyond their circumstances. Award-winning eye surgeon and humanitarian, Dr. Michael Colvard, founded Colvard Learning with the goal to raise literacy levels in American schools. In 2011, that goal expanded into international outreach when Dr. Colvard donated the company’s edtech prototypes to the village school in Oshakati (northern Namibia, Africa) for trial runs in the classroom. In Africa, learning English is a vital pathway to academic and professional achievement.

Every year for the past 20 years, Dr. Colvard performs eye operations free of charge as a volunteer in this remote and underserved region, and it is in this service that he was made aware of the specific needs of the villagers, and became a patron of the school. When he first arrived in the village, he found the Oshakati School shouldering the burden of caring for hundreds of poor and vulnerable children, many of them orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.

Reddit “Ask Me Anything” Q&A with Colvard Learning’s Innovative Founder Dr. Michael Colvard: Leveling the Literacy Playing Field with Fun Phonics

Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, 6 a.m.-3 p.m., the award-winning eye surgeon and inventor, D. Michael Colvard, M.D., via Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything,” will answer online questions about his innovative Colvard Learning Literacy programs which take children through a system of phonics and high-tech interactive learning that he hopes will level the playing field for disadvantaged children, as well as help any child crack the code for reading English

Los Angeles, CA, August 29, 2016 –(PR.com)– On Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. PST, Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything” site will feature award-winning eye surgeon and inventor, Michael Colvard, M.D., answering questions about his high-tech, innovative Colvard Learning early education literacy programs, which combine teaching phonics with interactive animation, storylines, handwriting and voice recognition.

For the past three years, the programs have been utilized in private schools with great success. Principal Catherine Carvalho at St. Bruno School in Whittier, Calif., praised the program for its “lively, enjoyable lessons” which are so engaging, they “eliminate distractions for the children.”

“First, we teach kids the individual sounds of language, and then teach them the symbols associated with those sounds,” explained Dr. Colvard in an interview for L.A. Now & Then blog. “This makes the whole teaching process become logical and reasonable—so students understand that English isn’t just a chaotic mess, but a code that can be mastered.”

Named “Super Doctor” by L.A. Magazine, Dr. Colvard leads a rather eclectic life that regularly takes him from his busy Encino practice to Africa where he treats tribespeople who might otherwise go blind from cataracts. In addition to his thriving practice and teaching responsibilities at University of Southern California, six years ago Dr. Colvard set his sights on helping all children to learn how to read, no matter what their economic background.

“Studies show that many children from disadvantaged homes come to kindergarten with a ‘word poverty,'” said Dr. Colvard. “For various reasons, many are not exposed to the same number of words as children from upper class homes, so they are behind the 8-ball when they start school.”

The Colvard Learning “flagship” teaching program, “Pup’s Quest for Phonics,” is now available for download on iTunes (“Professor Pup’s Phoneme Farm”); and the Colvard Learning Center plans to launch two more programs for easy download in January 2017.

“I can’t wait for the sequel,” said Principal Carvalho.
